  • Jop (22) and his wife Huyn (20) earn their income through growing cassava and working in the fields. During the drought, their crops failed and they struggled to earn enough money to support their two young children - their son Nien (4) and daughter Vem (18 months). Sometimes they could only afford to eat one meal a day, or would go without any meals at all so that their children could eat. Save the Children helped Jop and his family by giving them enough rice to last a month, meaning that any money they were able to earn could be spent on seeds, soil and insecticide to get their livelihoods back on track. Jop says “My wife and I were very worried about food for our family and children… the children got sick more often because they are very young and not as resilient to a lack of food as me and my wife.” “We were very happy when we were given the rice. It removed our worry about the food for the family.” Vietnam is just emerging from the worst drought in 90 years as a result of the strongest El Niño on record. It has affected an estimated 2 million people, including 1 children. The drought caused an unusually high level of saline (salt) to enter the Mekong Delta and underground water sources, poisoning crops and causing harvests to fail. Families in the region are largely dependent on the farming of rice, cassava and corn, meaning that as well as the risk to their health, their livelihoods have been destroyed. Save the Children has provided emergency water trucking and water filters to the worst affected areas meaning that people do not have to drink contaminated water, and have also ensured there is safe water in schools. We have distributed rice to the poorest families, and provided nutritional food for children to keep them healthy.

A devastating cyclone in Mozambique destroyed Joanna’s home and crops, leaving her with almost nothing to give her baby Wesley. “It destroyed corn that was still growing,” she says. “There is no cucumber or tomato – we only had rotten to give to my child.” We delivered food packages containing rice, beans and oil to hundreds of the worst-affected families – so mums like Joanna could give their children enough to eat.
